Bill Cook lifted in and around North Carolina in the 1970's. He was a super-heavyweight and often lifted against Eugene Neal. In 1972 Bill placed second to Jon Cole in the senior nationals. Although he was far behind in total, Bill was nevertheless proud of that accomplishment. As of the mid 70's he squatted 660 , benched 400, and deadlifted 700 at just over 300 lbs. Like many other lifters he would tell "fish" stories of what he could do in training. Bill suffered a bad knee injury in 1975, but came back a few years later in the late 70's Unfortunately, Bill Cook passed away in 1979 in the prime of life. He is often spoke of by "old time" lifters like Don Long, Red Swaim, Gene Neal , and a few others.
With his shaved head and beard he looked out of place in his days, however Bill was actually a man far ahead of his time. He used a very wide stance in the squat, and did feats of strength similar to those found now. Yes, Bill would fit in very well now. He was ofter mis-understood in his days , but strength sports would welcome him now.
